Bonnie's Elf Priest book is great and highly recommended. It also has been attacked by some prominent Republicans, which gives it extra cachet.

Cooking is a great thing and Jeff Potter's book is great. I also strongly recommend Harold McGee's three books if you have any interest in the science of cooking (as opposed to "food science", which is a different beast entirely. Of course you could always pre-order Nathan Myhrvold's new magnum opus, which looks like it will be terrific and maybe even worth the money. Courses are also great - if you are in the NYC area the French Culinary Institute has some that include guest lectures by Harold McGee and the amazing Dave Arnold.

Also you can build things - this is what I usually do. It is pretty easy to put together a simple sous vide circulator based on a crock pot if someone is into cooking. Ziplock bags almost work as well as a fancy vacuum machine:-) My wife loves observing nature (she is a biologist) so I have built "bat detectors" that shift down their ultrasonic utterances to something we can hear. You can even make this a challenging project if you like by preserving the spectral quality

But focus on his or her interest - too many geeks do clueless things:-)
